The Nittnaus family has been making wine in the Burgenland region of Austria since 1684. Anita & Hans took over the current estate (founded by Hans grandfather in 1927) in 1985. They are working towards being fully biodynamic, but everything has been organic and biodynamic since at least 2004. Most of their vineyards are farmed in this way. Everything is harvested by hand, native yeasts and minimal intervention in the winery. "We want to produce wines that consist of earth, sun, air and water. No more, no less." This Blaufrankisch comes from biodynamic vineyards on the slopes of Leitha Mountains. Kalk and Schiefer refers to the chalk and slate soils from which this wine comes, lending a great minerality to this wine. Fermented and aged in large 500L barrels. 2018 was a cool, rainy spring that then became warm quickly, requiring an earlier harvest than usual. The estate considers it a great year for red wine!
